Geneva General Hospital Medical Program Grad Offers Insight to Current Students
Some of the Finger Lakes region’s brightest high school students are accepted into Geneva General Hospital’s New Vision Medical Career Program. So when New Vision Graduate Riley O’Neil stopped by to chat with them about his experience as a first-year medical student at Albany Medical College, the students took note.

The 2006 Midlakes High School graduate says his experiences as a New Vision student (going on rotations, allowing him to shadow doctors and hospital staff) was rewarding, and he wanted to give back. He was happy to offer some practical, real-world advice to the students as they begin to think about their career and educational goals including declaring a major, building a resume, study tips, and networking.

“I met doctors on my rotations at Geneva General that were really excited about their work and they encouraged me to ask questions. That experience was unbelievably important in my journey, and helped form my philosophy about giving back and talking with the Hospital’s students so they can have a leg up,” said O’Neil.

Laura Van Niel, New Vision program director, finds the current students really respond well to their peers who have been through the program. “The current students can see themselves in Riley’s shoes, so they are excited to ask him questions about his journey to medical school,” she said. “They trust his perspective.”

The New Vision Medical Careers Program is an educational partnership with Wayne Finger Lakes Technical & Career Center and Finger Lakes Health. Now in its 14th year of offering outstanding high school seniors from surrounding districts a total immersion approach to education; the New Vision program integrates English, Health Science, Participation in Government and Economics into a curriculum where students meet daily at Geneva General Hospital.
