Special Needs Unit at Huntington Living Center Undergoes Renovations
Waterloo-Renovations to the 40 bed Special Needs Unit at Huntington Living Center have been completed after beginning in the summer of 2009. These are the first renovations to the unit that opened 15 years ago. The renovations were designed to meet the needs of the residents with Alzheimers that live at Huntington Living Center.

Renovations include new ceiling tiles, lighting, wall finishes, draperies and vinyl plank flooring and millwork in each room and corridor. There are three corridors within the unit that all lead to a common area. Each of the corridors has a name: Blue Spruce Lane, Red Maple Lane and Evergreen Lane. Each lane name matches the colors on the corridor to make it easy for residents to find their way to where they are going. Each lane has special areas set up including a nursery area, a nature area with games and an entertainment area with a large TV and pictures of legendary movie stars for the residents to enjoy. There is a memory box outside of each resident’s room for family members and residents to place items that have a special meaning to the resident.

An open house was held on May 12 to showcase the unit and the renovations to the resident’s family members and the general public. “The open house was a huge success and gave us the opportunity to invite the community to into our facility. We educated the guests about modern LTC practices specifically that our "Living Centers" are homes not institutions” comments Bill Garrity, Administrator for Huntington Living Center. Huntington provides warm, comfortable surroundings for family and friends to visit with one another in our lobby, front patio, gazebo area and private dining areas. Garrity also said “we are very proud of the renovations and environment we are able to provide to our residents. We would welcome an opportunity to schedule a visit with anyone who would like more information.”

Huntington Living Center is located at 369 East Main Street, Waterloo, NY 13165. To learn more about Huntington Living Center please call (315) 787-4733.
