New Vision Students Gain Hands-on Experience in Workshop with Orthopedic Surgeon
The Geneva General Hospital’s New Vision Medical Career Program prides itself on offering its students practical, hands-on experience. A recent visit to Dr. Olaf Lieberg’s practice did just that when he invited the students to an orthopedic/casting workshop where he schooled them on the art of applying and removing a cast.

Lieberg, an orthopedic surgeon with FLH Medical, P.C. Orthopedics, in Geneva, allowed each student to apply and remove a cast by adding cast padding, a fiberglass bandage, and then removing it with the cast saw.

Just as valuable, Dr. Lieberg shared his background, journey through medical school, and offered insight as to how mentors played a valuable part in helping shape him as a medical professional.

“The students always enjoy casting each other,” said Laura Van Niel, instructor for the New Vision program, “but I believe they enjoy Dr. Lieberg’s personal stories just as much.”

The New Vision Medical Careers Program is an educational partnership with Wayne Finger Lakes Technical & Career Center and Finger Lakes Health. Now in its 16th year of offering outstanding high school seniors from surrounding districts a total immersion approach to education, the New Vision program integrates English, Health Science, Participation in Government and Economics into a curriculum where students meet daily at Geneva General Hospital.
