Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Recognizes Geneva General Hospital Laboratory
The Geneva General Hospital Laboratory’s Microbiology Department was recently recognized for its contributions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Emerging Infections Programs (EIPs).

These contributions include providing statistical information about infections in the community, bacterial isolates of infections being tracked, and influenza specimens of flu types being monitored by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). NYSDOH is 1 of 10 state health departments included in the EIP network. The information reported by the Geneva General Hospital Laboratory and other participating New York state hospitals is reported to the CDC and used by the Emerging Infections Programs to define critical infection control issues of national public health importance.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is a true testament to the great work being performed by our dedicated employees under the leadership of Dr. William Dean, Laboratory Medical Director,” said Paul Engineri, Laboratory Manager, Finger Lakes Health.

The EIPs was established in 1995 in response to the CDC’s 1994 strategy, Addressing Emerging Infectious Disease Threats: A Prevention Strategy for the United States. The network consists of 10 state health departments and their collaborators in local health departments, academic institutions, other federal agencies, and public health and clinical laboratories; infection prevention departments; and healthcare providers.
