Geneva General Hospital Receives New, More Efficient Stretcher, Thanks to Auxiliary
The Geneva General Hospital Auxiliary members know that demands on healthcare professionals have never been greater. The group wanted to ease the load of the hospital staff a bit, so it recently made a donation to the Finger Lakes Health Foundation in the gift of a new Stryker Prime stretcher.

The stretcher is designed to enhance the patient experience, while ensuring caregiver safety and efficiency. The 700-pound weight capacity, combined with multiple mobility solutions, help accommodate heavy patients and long transports. The stretcher was specifically purchased to allow emergency room staff to better treat stroke patients.

When a patient begins having stroke symptoms, there is a three-hour window where one must receive clot-busting drugs, typically tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), to stand the best chance of a full recovery. The amount of tPA given is based on a patient’s weight, so having a scale built right into the stretcher allows precious time to be saved.

“When we get a call that an ambulance is arriving with a stroke victim, we can have the stretcher ready and waiting for that patient,” said Debbie McCaig, Emergency Department nurse manager. “We often have a short window of time to treat a stroke patient, so weighing them is a top priority. The Auxiliary’s gift allows us to be ready to treat stroke patients at any given time which is a great benefit to the patient and our community. We can be faster and more efficient, and as a Stroke Center of Excellence, that’s important.”

Established in 1951, the Geneva General Hospital Auxiliary, through friend-raising, fund-raising and volunteer service, is committed to helping the organization provide compassionate and high quality health care services to our Finger Lakes community.
