Geneva General Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program Recertified

Geneva General Hospital has been awarded Program Recertification for its Cardiac Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

Cardiac Rehabilitation programs are designed to limit the physiological and psychological effects of cardiac illness, reduce the risk of sudden death or relapse, control cardiac symptoms, stabilize and/or improve the patient’s condition, and enhance the patient’s quality of life. The programs also include education and support for patients and their families.

The Geneva program is divided into two phases with specialized steps and components. Both phases are designed to assist in the recovery of patients who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, angioplasty, valve replacement or repair, or stable angina.

Phase I takes place inside the hospital, where the patient gradually increases activity, prepares for discharge, and is educated on what is needed to continue life after the cardiac event. Phase II is an outpatient program. It begins three to four weeks after discharge and can last up to twelve weeks. In this program the medical director and the Cardiac Rehab staff develop patient-specific exercise prescriptions. Three 90-minute sessions are scheduled per week, and the patients are constantly supervised by cardiac life support nurses while on heart monitors.

Geneva General Hospital’s Cardiac Rehab program began in 1988. The program was one of the first in New York State to be certified by a national association in 1998, and is re-certified every three years.
