Finger Lakes Health Opens Orthopedic Destination
GENEVA – Finger Lakes Health announces the opening of its new Joint Center of the Finger Lakes, an orthopedic destination. The Center will open on January 3, 2012 in renovated space on the second floor at Geneva General Hospital.

The Joint Center of the Finger Lakes will be under the leadership of Dr. Nitin Banwar, Medical Director and surgeon for the Joint Center of the Finger Lakes. Dr. Olaf Lieberg, Dr. James Mark and Dr. Helen Wong will also be performing knee and hip replacements exclusively at the center. In addition to the four board-certified orthopedic surgeons, the Joint Center has its own experienced and dedicated staff, including operating room staff, nursing staff, therapists, and support staff, all focused on the care of the orthopedic patient whose needs are different than a traditional medical/surgical patient.

Denise Chamberlin, RN, is the clinical manager, and Kara Lincoln, PT, DPT, is the lead physical therapist and orthopedic care coordinator. Chamberlin, an RN for over 32 years, has four years experience working primarily with joint replacement patients. Lincoln, who has six years experience working with joint replacement patients, will coordinate and deliver post-surgical physical therapy for patients of the Joint Center.

The staff of the Joint Center follow patients through a continuum of care that begins six weeks prior to surgery. Chamberlin comments “we are there for their pre-operative education classes, hospital stay and the transition to home. This support promotes high patient satisfaction and successful outcomes for the joint replacement patient.” It is important for patients to know that there is 6 week lead time prior to surgery. “The community need for this service is evident; the January schedule is at capacity and we are currently scheduling surgeries for the middle of February” states Dr. Jose Acevedo, CEO & President of Finger Lakes Health.

The Joint Center of the Finger Lakes is a state-of-the-art orthopedic unit, with dedicated private rooms for patients. It provides the highest level of quality, compassionate, individualized care to patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. The Joint Center includes a progressive rehabilitation program and group physical therapy.

Joint replacement is an elective procedure, allowing patients to choose to have surgery to improve their quality of life. Joint replacement patients are not “sick” like many patients on an acute care floor. Dr. Banwar describes these patients as “mechanically disadvantaged.” The atmosphere of the Joint Center is “less institutional” and allows patients to eat meals together, participate in both individual and group physical therapy sessions and common education classes that will allow them to form bonds and motivate one another.

A public open house will be held to showcase the Joint Center on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 4 – 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at 4:45 p.m. Tours of the new unit will be conducted and refreshments are included.

Finger Lakes Health is proud to lead the region in orthopedic care with the launch of the Joint Center. The Department of Orthopedics at Geneva General Hospital represents the largest number of orthopedic surgeons located between Rochester and Syracuse. They include: Dr. Nitin Banwar, Dr. Steven Lasser, Dr. James B. Mark and Dr. Helen Wong, of Interlakes Orthopaedic Surgery; and Dr. Raman Dhawan and Dr. Olaf Lieberg of FLH Medical, P.C. – Orthopedic Surgery.
