Family Birth Center
Having a baby at Finger Lakes Health's Family Birth Center assures that you will be delivering in an environment that is welcoming to families, that we will be sensitive to your needs of as a mother, and that your baby's birth will be oriented toward a safe and healthy future for your baby.
Our philosophy of family-focused obstetrical care and childbirth is centered on an innovative approach called Single Room Maternity Care. You will go through labor, deliver, and recover all in the same room. All doctors, nurses, and medical equipment come to you! Our rooms are large enough to accommodate visiting family members or friends.
A New Family
Your baby's birth experience starts as soon as you learn that you are pregnant. This is the start of a wonderful relationship. Our nurses conduct informative classes to help you and your support person understand the changes your body will go through during pregnancy. Classes offered include: Early Prenatal, Prepared Childbirth, Baby Massage and Breast-feeding. New parents aren't the only ones eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new baby, so we also offer classes for siblings to include them in the exciting birth process.
We also offer WelcomeNewborn, an online photo album, to share your baby's first photos with your loved ones. Expecting mothers can sign up for this free service before birth, and include email addresses of family and friends, so when the baby comes, the process is easy and quick. Just borrow the camera from the nurses' station, take photos and, using the touch-screen kiosk, your baby's photos are just moments away from being sent to your special list of loved ones, while you are still in the hospital. As a courtesy, you can also take home your disk full of photos, free of charge.
Mother-Baby Care
Our philosophy of care during the post-partum phase of your stay is referred to as mother-baby care. One nurse will care for the mother and infant together. During most of the stay, the infant will room in with the mother to promote better bonding. Although, at anytime she chooses, the mother can elect to place the baby in the nursery so she can tend to her own needs and get needed rest. Our Family Birth Center provides state-of-the-art infant security so parents can rest assured. New moms are taught what to expect and how to care for themselves in the days to follow birth.
Diagnostic evaluation includes non-stress testing, contraction stress testing, antenatal testing, fetal monitoring, newborn testing and newborn hearing screening.
Exceptional Medical Staff
The quality of medical care at Finger Lakes Health is exceptional. Our physicians, which include obstetricians, pediatricians and family practitioners, provide the highest level of care and give personal attention to their patients and the newborn. Especially important is the continuing relationship with these physicians in your own community as your family grows and grows up.
Our nurses are all specially trained and have completed training in Neonatal Resuscitation. They also have a special way of caring for mothers and babies, and they are able to give you helpful advice on everything from breast-feeding to caring for a fussy baby to giving your newborn his or her first bath.
