Foundation Awards Kitty Wigsten Scholarships
The Finger Lakes Health Foundation presented two members of the Penn Yan Academy Class of 2013 with the Kitty Wigsten Memorial Scholarship recently.
The one-year scholarship is awarded to a graduating Penn Yan senior who plans to pursue career studies in healthcare services. The scholarship is sponsored by the Finger Lakes Health Foundation and is funded through gifts given in memory of Katherine “Kitty” Wigsten who served Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years as a nurse, manager and administrative team member.
This year the award was split between Alyssa Broome and Samantha Martin.
Alyssa Broome plans to attend Wells College to study biology and pre-med, with the hope of attending medical school and one day becoming a pediatric oncologist and hematologist or pediatric plastic surgeon.
Broome has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Second Language Honor Society, Academy Club, Natural Helpers, International Club and Art Club and served as treasurer of her senior class.
Outside of school, she has been part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Miss Penn Yan Park Project, and has served as an English as a Second Language tutor. She has worked as a swim instructor at Keuka Lake State Park and at McDonald’s.
Samantha Martin will attend Monroe Community College to pursue a career as a radiologic technologist.
She has been a scholar athlete, having been a cheerleader at Penn Yan Academy, and has achieved honor roll status throughout her high school career. She was involved in the Natural Helpers and the HERO anti-bullying group.
Outside of school she was part of the Venture Crew that completed many community service projects including baking and donating dozens of cookies for the Keuka Comfort Care Home holiday cookie walk. She also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, and the Child and Family Resource Center through the Learn, Serve and Earn program, and she has volunteered at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital.
She works for the Village of Penn Yan recreation program at Indian Pines Park and also at Esperanza Mansion.
