Foundation Presents Solera Scholarships
The Finger Lakes Health Foundation presented two members of the Dundee Central School Class of 2013 with the Solera Scholarship recently.

The four-year scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue studies leading to a career in health care. The scholarship, sponsored by the Finger Lakes Health Foundation, is funded by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jakubowicz and by the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. It is given in memory of Joseph Jakubowicz, a former staff member of Dundee Central School.

The scholarship is awarded based on academic, extracurricular and community accomplishments and recommendations submitted on the applicant’s behalf.

This year the award was split between Chelsea Butler and Michaela Howell. Each will receive $900 per year for up to four years of study.

Chelsea Butler has been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, the Winter Percussion Ensemble, as well as Chorus, Jazz Band, Marching Band, A Capella and the Steel Drums. She also was involved with Natural Helpers at Dundee Central School.

In addition to her school activities, she works at Martini’s Shurfine in Dundee and volunteers at the local food pantry and the Dundee Scottish Festival.

She will be attending Mansfield University to study nursing. She plans to become a family nurse practitioner and hopes to work in an emergency room in the future.

Michaela Howell has been a member of the National Honor Society, was a varsity cheerleader, secretary of her junior class and co-president of her senior class. She was active in the Natural Helpers and the Theater Club. She also has participated in ballet, chorus, band, the Scotsmen Singers and A Capella groups and marching band.

Howell works at The Decoy and also baby sits and house sits regularly. She volunteers for the Junior Scots Cheerleading program and for a children’s tumbling class. She spent a summer in Windsor, ME, helping do home repair for poverty stricken families there.

Howell plans to attend Elmira College to study biology and chemistry, after which she hopes to attend the University of Rochester to obtain her medical degree and one day become a pediatrician.
