|This summer over 300 Finger Lakes Health employees took important steps to add exercise to do their daily routine. They took part in “Staff Steps,” a friendly walking competition between employees where staff members recorded each of their steps with a pedometer and walking log, then reported them bi-weekly during the 12-week program. The employees competed against each other as either an individual walker or as part of a team. All total, the employees accumulated more than 183 million (183,158,827) individual steps.
Prizes were awarded for winners throughout the competition, with the top walking team and top walking individual all winning a grand prize.
First place for the top employee walking team went to the Geneva General Hospital Lab consisting of employees Mary Capurso, Wayne Conklin, Alicia Derleth, Julie Evangelista, Sheila Niles, Shannon Passalacqua, and Mary Puls with an average per-person step total of 1,584,417.
First place for the top employee individual went to the Roni Bain from the Geneva General Hospital Emergency Department with a step total of 1,342,076.
Bain said she found simple ways to log her steps.
“When I started the program I thought it would be nice to get into a routine, so each week I found more ways to get more steps in -- whether working, or shopping, or out in the yard,” she said. “I lost about 12 pounds since we started the step program, and I feel more energetic too. I still keep up with my steps so I don't stop the healthy benefits my heart and body receive!”
Staff Steps participants represented a host of Finger Lakes Health entities including Geneva General, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Huntington Living Center, Living Center South, Interlakes Orthopaedic Surgery, Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing, Dundee Family Health Center, Finger Lakes Surgery Center, Seneca Family Health, and FLH Medical, P.C.
