FLH Foundation Presents Kitty Wigsten Award
TheFinger Lakes Health Foundation has presented Megan Lafferty of the Penn Yan Academy Class of 2014 with the Kitty Wigsten Memorial Scholarship.

The one-year scholarship is awarded to a graduating Penn Yan senior who plans to pursue career studies in healthcare services. The scholarship is sponsored by the Finger Lakes Health Foundation and is funded through gifts given in memory of Katherine “Kitty” Wigsten who served Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years as a nurse, manager and administrative team member.

Lafferty plans to attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges to study pre-med, with the hope of attending medical school and one day becoming an ophthalmologist or neurologist.

Lafferty has been a member of the National Honor Society, serving as president; on the Superior Honor Roll throughout junior high and high school; winner of the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and the Daughters of the American Revolution History Award.

She has served as president of her Senior Class, the Student Council and the Girls’ Athletic Association. She also has been a member of the Debate Club, the Science Olympiad Team, and the cross county, basketball and softball teams.

Outside of school, she has volunteered at Milly’s Pantry, St. Michael’s School and Church, Penn Yan Manor, and Christmas for the Needy. Lafferty is employed at the Nest Egg gift shop in Penn Yan.
