Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing Celebrates 2014 Commencement
The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN) celebrated the commencement of their 79th graduating class on July 31, 2014. The class of 14 students is now eligible to take their Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) exam. Graduates include: Barbara Bailey, Phelps; Christine Balistreri, Geneva; Kimberly Bazdaric, Geneva; Allison Breen, Newark; Cynthia Burgess, Rochester; Michelle Ferguson, Farmington; Tonia Flowers, Henrietta; Amanda Graves, Middlesex; Christine Jones, Rushville; Kristin Riek, Geneva; Crystal Rosser, Geneva; Brittany Updike, Interlaken; Pamela Washak, Geneva and Dylan Winkler, Geneva.

Awards were given to many outstanding graduates:

Michelle Ferguson received the Fidelia Harman Memorial Award for highest academic achievement in nursing courses;

Kimberly Bazdaric received the Marion S. Whelan Memorial Award recognizing a graduate nurse(s) who exemplifies the characteristics of dedication to nursing and self-discipline which were not only a part of Miss Whelan’s life, but are exemplified every day in the professionalism and dedication shown by the nurses in the Finger Lakes Health Education Department and throughout the organization;

Christine Balistreri received the Kathleen “Rita” Talbert Memorial Award for demonstrating willpower and determination in achieving her goal despite obstacles and the Thomas I. Whelan Memorial Award for demonstrating in her life and in nursing school the motto “Faith-Hope-Charity”;
Pamela Washak and Barbara Bailey received the Practical Nurse Licensing and Examination Award for exemplifying, through written illustration, the personal commitment and dedication needed to travel the journey that nursing school presents;

Cynthia Burgess received the MSWSPN Service Award for outstanding service in medical/surgical nursing;

Dylan Winkler received the Alice Bergstresser Memorial Award given to the graduate practical nurse for exemplifying the characteristics Alice portrayed in her everyday living; namely, determination, dedication and compassion;

Crystal Rosser received the Bell Family Award given to the graduate practical nurse for demonstrating perseverance and commitment by pursuing all available academic resources to achieve success in the nursing program.

The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing, one of only three hospital-based nursing programs in New York State, was founded in 1956. Since that time, it has graduated over 1,600 nurses. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2014 for their outstanding achievements.
