Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing Celebrates 2015 Commencement
The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN) celebrated the commencement of their 80th graduating class on August 6, 2015. The class of 25 students is now eligible to take their Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) exam. Graduates include John Abraham, Geneva; Tanisha Barnes, Auburn; Nan Choi, Geneva; Olivia Colvin, Canandaigua; Bethany Comuso, Seneca Falls; George Cotter, Penn Yan; Jacqueline Cruz, Rochester; Taylor Culver, Newark; Lisa Empey, Farmington; Alysha Evancho, Manchester; Andrea Gordon, Gates; Terra Hubbell, Geneva; Katrina Joe, Romulus; Catherine Kamara, Fairport; Kelly Kier, Macedon; Rodney Lennon, Geneva; Ayesha Marks, Jamaica; Courtney Merkley, Penn Yan; Marisol Molina, Geneva; Danielle Olevnik, Dundee; Amy Russell, Waterloo; Heather Staples, Waterloo; Kari Strait, Canandaigua; Sara Weigert, Naples and Sheila Williams, Geneva.

Awards were given to many outstanding graduates:

Lisa Empey received the Fidelia Harman Memorial Award for highest academic achievement in nursing courses;

Courtney Merkley received the Marion S. Whelan Memorial Award recognizing a graduate nurse(s) exemplifying the characteristics of dedication to nursing and self-discipline which were not only a part of Miss Whelan’s life, but are exemplified every day in the professionalism and dedication shown by the nurses in the Finger Lakes Health Education Department and throughout the organization;

Danielle Olevnik received the Kathleen “Rita” Talbert Memorial Award given in memory of Rita, a 1963 graduate of this program. Danielle reflects the attributes that Rita demonstrated in her life. Rita showed willpower and determination in achieving her goal of entering the nursing profession despite obstacles that would have stopped others from pursuing their dream for demonstrating willpower and determination in achieving her goal despite obstacles;

Marisol Molina received the MSWSPN Service Award for outstanding service in medical/surgical nursing;

Katrina Joe received the Alice Bergstresser Memorial Award given to the graduate practical nurse for exemplifying the characteristics Alice portrayed in her everyday living; namely, determination, dedication and compassion;

Nan Choi received the Bell Family Award, recognizing a graduate practical nurse for demonstrating perseverance and commitment by pursuing all available academic resources to achieve success in the nursing program;

Taylor Culver received the Catherine J. Loudin Achievement Award, honoring the graduate practical nurse most exemplifying the values of Finger Lakes Health during his or her educational training;

John Abraham received the William J. DiCicco Memorial Award honoring the graduate practical nurse exhibiting the attributes that Bill demonstrated throughout his life: devotion to family, a strong work ethic, the value of education and love of country;

Amy Russell received the Advocate Award recognizing the graduate practical nurse that has shown the qualities most important to healthcare delivery; caring, quality, professionalism and passion;

Sheila Williams received the MSWSPN Student Achievement Award, given to the graduate who, in this year of education, demonstrated consistent growth through his or her awareness of patient needs and his or her achievement in nursing performance;

John Abraham received the Thomas I. Whelan Memorial Award. The recipient of this award each year is chosen not by faculty, but by their fellow classmates and is given to the graduate practical nurse who has shown in his or her life and in his or her nursing the school motto “Faith-Hope-Charity”;

The Janet Lynn Simmonds Memorial Award given in memory of Janet, a 1972 graduate of MSWSPN, to a member of the community who has contributed to nursing was presented to Cindy Weeder.

The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing, one of only three hospital-based nursing programs in New York State, was founded in 1956. Since that time, it has
graduated over 1,600 nurses. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2015 for their outstanding achievements.
