Group’s Heirloom is Returned – 40 Years Later (Story w/ Photos)
Linda Quackenbush, president of the Taylor-Brown Auxiliary, recently received quite the gift – 40 years in the making.

John Mann had been in the process of packing for a move to upper Michigan when he came across a treasure he knew was too valuable to toss – a large antique quilt comprised of a number of squares depicting landmarks from around Seneca County, all hand-embroidered by members of the Taylor-Brown Auxiliary. He told Quackenbush he felt the best place for it would be back with the Auxiliary.

“It’s exquisite, like a treasure. It’s such beautiful, intricate work.” said Quackenbush. “They were so ambitious back then. I told John how impressed we all are. Now we are trying to figure out whose initials are embroidered on each square. We’ll go through our archives this winter to see if we can figure it out, and maybe we’ll put it out on Facebook to see if others can help. We think we’ve figured out a couple of names.”

The letter enclosed from Mann with the quilt said his parents, John and Dorothy, were antique dealers who had won the quilt in a raffle at an antique show back in 1976.

“I know my parents would be glad you got it back,” Mann said in his letter.

The Taylor-Brown Auxiliary was founded in 1958 to support the Taylor-Brown Hospital in Waterloo. Today the group raises funds in support of the Huntington Living Center in Waterloo.

Debbie Lockett, assistant administrator at Huntington, has been working with the Auxiliary since 1992. She was amazed by the quilt’s story.

“I just can’t believe it came back,” she said. “It’s awesome. Some of the things depicted I don’t even remember. A lot of work went into it. Now we’re trying to figure out how to best display it at Huntington Living Center for everyone to enjoy.”
