Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing Receives Accreditation
The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing (MSWSPN), based at Geneva General Hospital has received a maximum award of continuing accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Education for Nursing (ACEN). The accreditation is for an eight-year period.

ACEN, based in Atlanta, GA, is responsible for the specialized accreditation of nursing education programs including Clinical Doctorate, Master’s Degree, Baccalaureate Degree, Associate Degree, Diploma, and Practical Nursing programs. The Commission has authority and accountability for carrying out the responsibilities inherent in the application of standards and criteria, accreditation processes, and the affairs, management, policy-making, and general administration of the ACEN. ACEN is nationally recognized as a specialized accrediting agency for both post-secondary and higher degree programs in nursing education.

Dr. Victoria Record, Ed D, RN CNE, Director of Marion S Whelan School of Practical Nursing commented, “We are very pleased to achieve accreditation status from ACEN.” She explained that the accreditation process is extensive and that receiving accreditation “demonstrates the School’s continued compliance with many stringent guidelines set forth by the ACEN and evidences the achievement of quality and excellence in nursing education.”

MSWSPN continues to demonstrate Finger Lakes Health’s commitment to education and nursing. The health system offers a certified nurse assistant (CNA) program at both the Geneva and Penn Yan (Soldiers & Sailors Memorial) hospitals, a RN and Surgical Technology program through Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing as well as a dual degree program – Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in partnership with Keuka College.

The Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing, one of only three hospital-based nursing programs in New York State, was founded in 1956. Since that time, it has graduated over 1,600 nurses.
