Yates TB & Health Grant Helps Patients Get Meds

The Yates County Tuberculosis and Health Association has awarded $650 to the Finger Lakes Health Foundation to support the “Benevolent Medication Fund” of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH). The grant, to be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Foundation, will assist patients who, because of financial limitations, are unable to afford essential medications following discharge from the hospital. This is the fourth grant the Association has made to this medication fund since 2002.

“We are deeply grateful to the Yates County TB & Health Association for its support over the years,” said Ruth Benedict, executive director of the Finger Lakes Health Foundation. “In challenging times like these, some patients are unable to meet the cost of the prescription medications they need following discharge. Many are uninsured or have coverage that does not include prescription medicine. The dollars in this special medication fund are frequently depleted before such needs are met.”

Patients discharged from SSMH unable to afford prescribed medication may receive one-time financial assistance from the hospital’s Benevolent Medication Fund, as determined by the Care Management Department. This financial assistance covers a one-month supply of the prescribed medication, or enough to last until a follow-up appointment with the doctor, whichever occurs first. The participating pharmacy bills Care Management, which processes the payments from funds available at the Finger Lakes Health Foundation.
