FLH College of Nursing Graduates First Class
The Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing graduated its first class with a pinning ceremony and commencement exercises in late May. Twenty-four students were pinned and graduated in the College’s inaugural class.

The pinning ceremony took place on the Friday before the Sunday commencement. The pinning occurred at the Ramada Inn – Geneva Lakefront, with the commencement ceremony at The Smith Opera House in Geneva.

Dr. Jose Acevedo, President & CEO of Finger Lakes Health and the College of Nursing, welcomed students to the commencement ceremony. Eileen Gage, MA, RN, Vice President, Nursing, Finger Lakes Health, gave the keynote address. Other speakers included Sara Lawler, a member of the Class of 2010, who spoke on “Whenever You Remember”. Suzanne Sinclair, Chair of the Finger Lakes Health Board of Directors, presented diplomas, assisted by Patrick Boyle, Vice President, Human Resources, Finger Lakes Health. Terry Deeds, class president, also spoke.

Presenting special awards were Victoria Record, MS, RN, Dean of the college, and Mary Donahue, MS, RN, a college instructor. Receiving the Academic Achievement Award for t he highest academic achievement in the nursing program was Terry Deeds of Seneca Falls. The Clinical Practice Award for outstanding service in medical and surgical nursing went to three graduates: Lindsey Phillips of Rochester, Angela Schultz of Gorham and Ancy Charlot of Ovid.

The Patricia Schillaci Memorial Award for the graduate nurse, who has demonstrated the ability to couple technology with caring, compassionate nursing care, was presented to Terry Deeds.

Ancy Charlot received the College of Nursing Class Choice Award, presented to the graduate nurse who demonstrated principles of relationship-based care by creating healthy relationships with the people he or she works with and cares for, selected by class vote.

The Student Development award, given to the graduate nurse who has demonstrated consistent commitment and growth in the academic and clinical setting, was awarded to Kathy Nielsen-Erskine of Himrod.

Peter Welch of Naples was the recipient of the Florence Nightingale Award, presented to the graduate nurse who demonstrates a spirit to improve the health care environment.

The Student Engagement Award, presented to the graduate nurse who demonstrates the five C’s: Clarity, Competency, Confidence, Collaboration and Commitment leading to the ability to adapt to a change healthcare environment, was awarded to Emily Carson of Geneva.

Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing graduates for 2010 are: Elizabeth Albro, Emily Carson, Joy Corneles, Sara Lawler and Emily Winnek from Geneva; Kimberly Alger and Jacqueline Laribee, Waterloo; Rajdeep Bajwa, Terry Deeds, and Jacqueline Johns, Seneca Falls; Heidi Bassage, Manchester; Ancy Charlot, Ovid; Milagros Garling, Canandaigua; Sean Hanyon, Lyons; Allison Harris, Wolcott; Tina Liddiard, Middlesex; Katherine Nielsen-Erskine, Himrod; Lindsey Phillips, Rochester; Karen Ressue, Phelps; Angela Schultz, Gorham; Rebecca Swarthout, Port Byron; Alicia Tuxill, Penn Yan; Peter Welch, Naples; and Lori Westervelt, Interlaken.
