Local Students Explore Health and Medical Careers with Finger Lakes Health
Finger Lakes Health, in partnership with the Western New York Rural Health Education Center, offered two health-related camps for young people this summer. MASH (Medical Academy of Science and Health) Camp was a week-long program held at Geneva General Hospital for students entering 7th and 8th grades, while Camp MedQuest was a two-day program for students entering 9th through 12th grades, held at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan.

Both programs are designed to allow students to experience the possibilities of healthcare careers right where healthcare services are being delivered--in the hospital guided by healthcare professionals including nurses, medical doctors, technicians and other health care providers.

Fourteen campers from six school districts participated in MASH Camp, while Camp MedQuest hosted 10 campers from seven school districts.

MASH Camp participants circulated through various departments while Camp MedQuest students selected high-interest areas in which they spent dedicated time with healthcare providers and individual departments.

Campers loved taking part in the innovative sessions crafted by the hospital professionals. A sample of evaluation comments include:

“It was really cool to see the heart and lungs.”

“Rehabilitation was a lot of fun because it was very hands-on.”

“I loved being able to see organs up close and hold a brain!”

“Bio-mechanics made me laugh and helped me learn about the medical world.”

Thanks to the imaginative and memorable presentations provided by staff, students got involved in: intubating a mannequin with a respiratory therapist; visiting patients and learning about kidney disease at the Dialysis Center; talking with the Finger Lakes Ambulance crew and sitting in their ambulance; using a microscope to view microbes and parasites from the lab collection; viewed a wide variety of body parts, including smoker’s lungs; dissected a pig heart; got a look at how much fat is in many popular fast (and not so fast) foods with a nutritionist; tried out the tools of physical, occupational, and speech therapists; tried their hand at suturing pig shoulders; played games with the residents of the Living Centers; learned how to change a baby’s diaper; and talked with patients in the Cardiac Rehabilitation program.
