Caring for Our Community
Finger Lakes Health is a community owned, not-for-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and improving the health of all people in the central Finger Lakes region. Governed by a board of directors held in trust for our community, we serve as a vital safety net, serving our communities with access to quality healthcare services. Finger Lakes Health delivers numerous community benefit programs, such as community health fairs, lectures, and free health screenings, demonstrating our commitment to improving the overall health of the residents of the Finger Lakes region. Here is a small sampling of what we at Finger Lakes Health have had the privilege of giving back to the community in the past year:
- We provided over $1 million in financial aid for patients who needed assistance in paying for healthcare services. We have always been committed to providing compassionate care to every member of our community regardless of their ability to pay. For more information regarding our financial assistance program, please call 787-4150 in Geneva, or 531-2155 in Penn Yan.
- Our "Dine and Discuss" health lecture series has continued to connect Finger Lakes Health physicians and health professionals with members of the community. In 2006, 1,275 people attended 16 different lectures provided throughout the year. These educational lectures addressed numerous topics including stroke, joint health, delirium and dementia, the diabetic foot, the aging eye, hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, sleep disorders, cardiac health, women's health and more.
- We hosted two major community health fairs. Over 3,500 people attended these health fairs free of charge! These events featured health information and screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs, and presentations for children.
- Finger Lakes Health employees serve a vital role in local workforce development and youth mentoring in the health careers. In total, our employees provided over 12,000 hours of hands-on mentoring with area students interested in health careers. Finger Lakes Health also has long-standing partnerships with Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and the Wayne Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center's New Vision Program. In addition, we also offer several student camps MASH (Medical Academy of Science and Health) and Camp Medquest in conjunction with R-AHEC.
- Our employees donate thousands of volunteer hours each year to many worthy community programs including serving at the Geneva Community Lunch program, participating in many local walks/events such as the Alzheimer's Association's "Walk to Remember", and supporting disaster readiness planning, among hundreds of other activities.
- Finger Lakes Health provides necessary meeting space for many area support groups and community programs, including a facility used by the Yates County Recreation and Resource Center in Penn Yan and the grounds of Seneca Family Health and Huntington Living Centers in Waterloo for the moving Healing Field event, which was held as part of Celebrate Commemorate Waterloo.
We are proud to continue our strong commitment to being at the heart of our community.
