S&S Awarded CT Scanning Accreditation
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Penn Yan, has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) technology. The accreditation is the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

CT scanning – sometimes called CAT scanning – is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various medical conditions.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

“This is a rigorous process that demonstrates to our patients and referring physicians our commitment to quality patient care,” noted Mary Ann Walton, Diagnostic Imaging supervisor at Soldiers & Sailors.
Soldiers & Sailors’ 16-slice spiral CT scanner with a workstation and dual syringe power injector provides angiography capability, outstanding image resolution, reduced scan time per procedure and diagnostic tools, such as detailed 3-D reconstruction. The number of slices refers to the number of sections imaged. The thinner the sections, provides more detailed images.

Jeffrey Fultz, director of Diagnostic Imaging for Finger Lakes Health, added, “This type of accreditation is not an automatic certification. It takes a lot of work and is only awarded to those departments that demonstrate outstanding quality of their work. This is evidence that the care and services provided in Penn Yan are top notch and equal to, or better than, any other accredited facility. Congratulations to the staff in the Soldiers & Sailors Diagnostic Imaging Department for their hard work and dedication.”

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
