GENEVA – Nurse, Katherine Licak, RN, BSN, was honored by the health system with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. Katherine is currently working in the Geneva General Hospital Surgical Services department.

A grateful patient shared the following about Kathrine’s care in Geneva General Hospital:

“I was scheduled for procedure at Finger Lakes Health and was extremely anxious and nervous about the whole ordeal. Katie came to my room and immediately sensed I was having anxiety and stress. Katie took the time to talk to me and then proceeded to explain all the steps that would be taken place. From the pre-op-room to the OR she continued to be supportive and made me comfortable. Once in the OR she continued to be at my side and explain the steps. I remained calm and felt so comfortable and secure in her care. I should also add that I am hearing impaired and had to remove my hearing aid for the procedure. Katie made sure that she spoke loudly and clearly and confirmed that I had heard and understood everything she was saying. Katie made my experience a positive one and for that I’m so grateful!

UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health is proud to recognize Katherine Licak, RN, BSN with The DAISY Award.

Established by The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family, this award recognizes nurses who have a profound impact on the lives of their patients and families. Patrick died at age 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The exceptional care Patrick received from the nurses at his bedside inspired the creation of this award.

If you have received extraordinary care from a nurse, or if you are a family member of someone who has experienced great care, and would like to nominate them, please visit: www.daisyfoundation.org/contact-us.

Nomination boxes are also located throughout Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. Nurses throughout Finger Lakes Health will be recognized throughout the year at celebrations attended by their colleagues, patients, and visitors.

Each honoree receives a certificate commending them as an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
