SSMH Receives Community Foundation Grant
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital has been selected to receive a $1,800 grant from the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes Keuka Area Fund. The funds will be used for an “End of Life Care Room” on the first floor medical unit at the Penn Yan hospital.

The grant funds will allow for augmentation of the regular amenities in one patient room with some special items to create a comfortable atmosphere that is peaceful, serene and private, allowing the patient and family to be together in a setting that is as close to “home” as possible. The special room will include a small couch that converts to a bed for a family member to stay with the patient, a bedspread and sheet set, coffee maker, lamps, table and chairs and artwork.

End of life care helps to improve the quality of a patient’s last days by offering comfort and dignity. By making the surroundings more home-like, the goal is for both the patient and the family to be more comfortable.

“We are grateful to the Community Foundation for the grant that will allow us to create this special room for End of Life Care at Soldiers & Sailors,” said Lara Chatel Turbide, vice president, Community Services and executive director, Finger Lakes Health Foundation. “We also deeply appreciate the nursing staff at Soldiers & Sailors who recognize the need for this special room to care for those patients and their families.”
