Finger Lakes Health will be offering “Walk-In Screening Mammograms” in Geneva and Penn Yan starting in October.

“One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. As part of Finger Lakes Health’s commitment to providing our communities with increased access to care, women in our region will have the opportunity to walk-in and receive a screening mammogram without having to commit to a prescheduled time. We hope by providing this flexible option, more women will be able to have their mammogram instead of having to postpone it due to other conflicts” states Lisa Davis, Women’s Health Coordinator.

A woman should receive her first mammogram, called a baseline, sometime between the ages of 35 and 40. Beginning at age 40, a woman should have a yearly mammogram, in addition to an annual clinical breast exam, and monthly breast self-examinations.

In Geneva, Walk-In Screening Mammograms will be offered the second Monday of the month starting October 14 from 7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and from 12:45 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Women’s Health Services 200 North Street, Suite 303, located in the Medical Office Building, adjacent to Geneva General Hospital.

In Penn Yan, Walk-In Screening Mammograms will be offered the third Wednesday of the month starting October 16 from 9: 30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology Department at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH), 418 North Main Street.

Women’s Health Services at Geneva General Hospital offers 3D Mammography. Digital breast tomosynthesis (tomo), also known as 3D mammography, is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic breast-imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer. During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds.

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital will be hosting a public ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 30 to celebrate the installation of new 3D mammography at SSMH. The event will run from 3-5 p.m. with the ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. in the Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology Department. Fundraising is still underway to support the installation of this equipment.

Geneva General Hospital’s Women’s Health Services is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology offering mammograms, breast ultrasound, and breast biopsies (ultrasound guided and stereotactic). Breast MRI’s are offered at Geneva General Hospital through their partnership with Finger Lakes Radiology.
