Understanding Stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When this happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, causing brain cells to begin dying within minutes.

About Get With The Guidelines®

Get With The Guidelines® is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program that helps hospitals continuously improve care for stroke and cardiovascular patients. The program promotes consistent adherence to the latest research and provides valuable data for ongoing quality improvement.

Our awards are the result of a multidisciplinary team effort to design and maintain systems and procedures that ensure the highest standard of stroke care.

Immediate, Coordinated Treatment

When a patient arrives at Geneva General Hospital, our specialized stroke team immediately activates the stroke protocol and begins treatment — often within or faster than national time-frame standards.
When appropriate, patients receive intravenous clot-busting therapy to rapidly restore blood flow to the brain. This treatment has been proven to reduce long-term disability from stroke.

For patients who require advanced intervention, care is seamlessly coordinated with comprehensive stroke centers.
