GENEVA- UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health is proud to announce that Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan have earned multiple American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® achievement awards. These awards recognize a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care for patients with heart disease and stroke, leading to better outcomes, faster recovery and fewer hospital readmissions.

According to the American Heart Association, people living in rural communities have a 40% higher risk of developing heart disease and a 30% greater chance of dying from a stroke compared to those living in urban areas. More specifically, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. experiences a heart attack or stroke, leading causes of death in the United States.

"Providing quality patient care is our number one priority,” said Matthew Talbott, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs for UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health. “We are proud that our teams at Geneva General and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial hospitals are being recognized for the critical work they do every day to improve the lives of people in the Finger Lakes affected by cardiovascular events and stroke.”

Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital have received the Rural Coronary Artery Disease STEMI and NSTE-ACS Get With The Guidelines® GOLD Achievement Awards.

These awards underscore both hospitals’ excellence in treating patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), known to be more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks, and non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS), using research-based protocols and rapid response systems.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital also was honored with Bronze Award for Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Referring Center. Recognition as a STEMI Referring Center is designed to showcase hospitals of every size on the front lines of care that do not have 24/7 cardiac catheterization lab availability but work in collaboration with emergency medical services to ensure patients receive guideline-directed STEMI and non-STEMI care.

Geneva General Hospital was recognized with the Rural Stroke Gold and the Rural Stroke Gold Plus, Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Get With The Guidelines® is a proven in-hospital approach to improving patient outcomes across cardiovascular and stroke focus areas. Each program promotes consistent adherence to the latest research-driven guidelines and measurement, while providing data and information to professionals for continual improvement in patient care.

"Our two emergency rooms have the fastest ED throughput times in the region, which reflects our commitment to providing swift, efficient and quality emergency care to patients,” added Talbott.

These achievements affirm UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health’s ongoing dedication to delivering exceptional care, improving outcomes, and advancing rural health equity in the region’s diverse communities.
