Geneva General Hospital Welcomes Surgical Oncologist Ryan Fields, MD, to its Medical Staff

GENEVA- Geneva General Hospital is proud to welcome renowned surgeon Ryan Fields, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Fields is a surgeon and researcher devoted to caring for people with complex cancers. He is Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Surgeon-in-Chief at Strong Memorial Hospital, and Associate Director for Translational Research at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Dr. Fields and Brian Riesenberger, PA-C, will be treating soft tissue cancers at Geneva General Hospital.
A fellowship-trained Oncology Surgeon, Dr. Fields’ clinical practice focuses on surgery for cancers of the pancreas, biliary system, liver (including metastatic tumors), stomach, and soft tissues.
He has extensive experience surgically managing a wide spectrum of skin cancer diagnoses, including:
- Melanoma
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma (cutaneous)
- Merkel cell (cutaneous neuroendocrine) carcinoma
- Benign and malignant superficial soft tissue tumors (e.g. lipomatous tumors, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans [DFSP])
His research examines how cancers spread and how to improve diagnosis and treatment; he has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for the past 12 years.

Dr. Fields encourages a collaborative approach to patient care and has deep experience with challenging diagnoses, particularly in the context of multidisciplinary cancer
treatment. Prior to joining U Rochester, he served as Chief of Surgical Oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, where he co-led the Melanoma & Cutaneous Oncology Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center.
Dr. Fields earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, was a resident in General Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University and completed a Surgical Oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He and his wife, Laura Beth, have two children, Gabriel and Sarah.
Brian Riesenberger, PA-C received his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and his Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. John Fisher College.
Dr. Fields also will be working closely with our board-certified dermatologists Amanda Carpenter, M.D., Emily M. Lambert, M.D. and Diana Stephens, M.D., FAAD at Geneva General Dermatology.
