GENEVA – Micaela Thompson, RN, a nurse at University of Rochester Medicine Finger Lakes Health, was honored by the health system with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. Madison is currently working in the Geneva General Hospital Dialysis Center.

Micaela was nominated by a colleague while on 2 west at Geneva General Hospital:

“Micaela exemplifies the very best of nursing through her unwavering patient advocacy, clinical excellence, and deep compassion for every individual under her care. She has a remarkable ability to recognize when something isn’t right, and she consistently acts with urgency and determination to protect her patients. At the slightest concern for a patient’s safety, she collaborates tirelessly with the healthcare team to ensure the patient receives the attention, intervention, and resources they need. Her vigilance prevents patients from slipping through the cracks, and her voice is often the one that brings critical issues to light. Her advocacy is matched by her natural talent for providing high-quality, holistic nursing care.

Micaela is thorough, intuitive, and deeply engaged with her patients, always taking the time to listen, connect, and understand their needs. Whether she is coordinating complex care, educating families, or offering comfort during difficult moments, patients consistently feel supported, respected, and genuinely cared for. On this day, her patient expressed to the team how much he appreciated the exceptional care she provided, sharing that she made him feel truly safe and valued. When Micaela noticed a sudden deviation from his baseline, she made it her priority to alert the team early, ensuring swift intervention before his condition could worsen. Her advocacy directly contributed to timely escalation and transfer to a higher level of care, allowing him to receive the treatment he needed without delay. Micaela embodies what it means to be a nurse. Her dedication improves outcomes, builds trust, and elevates the standard of care for every patient she serves. She is a role model for her colleagues and an invaluable asset to our hospital,” said Ciara Smith (McCarthy) RN.

Finger Lakes Health is proud to recognize Micaela Thompson with The DAISY Award.

Established by The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family, this award recognizes nurses who have a profound impact on the lives of their patients and families. Patrick died at age 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The exceptional care Patrick received from the nurses at his bedside inspired the creation of this award.
