Finger Lakes Health(FLH) Rehabilitation department, has received a grant from the Yates Community Endowment through the Rochester Area Community Foundation to partner with the Yates Cultural Recreational Resources (YCRR) with FLH’s community exercise program, “Get Up and Get Going” that will begin on Tuesday, October 2 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
The “Get Up and Get Going” program meets at the FLH outpatient rehabilitation department sites and lasts for four weeks, twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a total of eight sessions. Participants work with Finger Lakes Health therapy staff during the 45-minute to hour-long sessions. The goals for the program include:
- describing the parts of an exercise program
- monitoring participants’ response to exercise
- establishing participants’ individualized goals
- learning how to safely exercise and advance participants’ program
- logging participants’ program
Classes are held at various times throughout the year and are limited to five participants to allow for individualized attention. Participants must obtain clearance from their physician to join the class. The program is designed to jumpstart participants into a safe exercise program, whether your goal is to exercise at home or in a gym. During the sessions, the therapy staff will tailor your program based upon the equipment you will have access to after the sessions end. Therefore, if you plan to work out in a gym setting, the therapy staff will set your program utilizing gym equipment. If your goal is for a home program, the therapy staff will use equipment similar to what you have in your home.
In Yates County, with the support of the Yates Community Endowment grant through the Rochester Area Community Foundation, the program will be free for participants and can include a three-month membership to the Yates Community Center. If a participant would like to continue progress in a gym or facility setting, the FLH therapy staff will work with staff from the Yates Community Center to make a safe transition from the eight sessions at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital to the Yates Community Center. “Community wellness is a goal of FLH Rehabilitation services,” states Maureen Loyal, DPT, director of rehabilitation services. “The grant allows us to provide a great program to our community and to partner with a great resource in the community, the YCRR.” To register for the October 2 program or to learn about future programs in Yates County, please call 315-531-2577.
The “Get Up and Get Going” program is also available at our other FLH outpatient rehabilitation department sites in Ontario and Seneca counties.
