Recognition - The DAISY Award

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Kozuha, BSN, RN, a nurse at UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health, was honored by the health system with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. Elizabeth is currently working in the OR/Endoscopy Department and Emergency Department at Geneva General Hospital.

A grateful mom shared the following about Elizabeth’s care in the Emergency Department at Geneva General Hospital:
I am honored to nominate Liz, RN/BSN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care and compassion she provided to my son, during his time in the Emergency Room at Geneva General Hospital. When we arrived, my son was very sick, and as a parent, the fear and uncertainty were overwhelming. From the moment Liz walked into the room, she was a calming presence. She didn’t just provide medical care—she provided reassurance, comfort, and kindness that made all the difference in such a stressful moment. She asked thoughtful questions, listened intently, and validated my concerns as a mother, making me feel heard and understood. Liz was open and honest about every step of my son’s care, ensuring that my husband and I felt informed and involved in the process. Her transparency and professionalism put our minds at ease, while her warmth and empathy provided much-needed emotional support. In a situation that could have felt chaotic and frightening, Liz brought clarity and calm, not just for my son but for our entire family. It is rare to find a nurse who so seamlessly blends clinical expertise with such deep compassion. Liz exemplifies the very best of nursing, and our family will always be grateful for the care she provided. She is truly deserving of the DAISY Award.”

UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health is proud to recognize Elizabeth Kozuha with The DAISY Award.

Established by The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family, this award recognizes nurses who have a profound impact on the lives of their patients and families. Patrick died at age 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The exceptional care Patrick received from the nurses at his bedside inspired the creation of this award.

If you have received extraordinary care from a nurse, or if you are a family member of someone who has experienced great care, and would like to nominate them, please visit: www.daisyfoundation.org/contact-us.

Nomination boxes are also located throughout Geneva General Hospital and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. Nurses throughout Finger Lakes Health will be recognized throughout the year at celebrations attended by their colleagues, patients, and visitors.

Each honoree receives a certificate commending them as an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
